Good Deeds

The world can be a pretty rough place. With crime and animosity there seems to be more bad than good. However, as citizens I believe it is our job to help make the world a better place. Your impact in the world may be small but every little bit helps. One of the ways in which you can help make the world a better place is through volunteering. The school that I attended previously required community service. One of my most influential community service projects that I was involved in was tutoring. I tutored low performing elementary students in reading. The majority of these students came from low income families. They were not only impacted by poverty but by academic struggles which often correspond with poverty. It was extremely fulfilling to see the improvement of the students each week. I took the initiative to not only tutor but to be a mentor to the students. I did not only tutor elementary students. I tutored middle schoolers as well. It was a different dynamic with the middle schoolers but I still felt a sense of gratification.
Apart from tutoring, I have also volunteered at the local Children’s Museum. The children’s museum taught me how to handle challenging situations in little time. It taught me that children are major contributors to society. The knowledge that they learned at the museum will stick with them forever. Continually, I am involved in my school’s SGA. SGA stands for Student Government Association. The main purpose of SGA is to plan school extracurricular activities, and improve the school and the community. Some of the ways in which SGA has improved the community include food drives, working for Habitat for Humanity, participating in Relay for Life, and more. Being apart of SGA has taught me to a humanitarian. There are so many needs out there in the community. When you take the time to do something special for the community you will get a sense of fulfillment knowing that you have contributed to a greater cause. My advice to any one wanting to do a cause for the greater good is to do something you love. For example, if you are interested in the health professions, volunteer at your local hospital. If you are academically proficient, find out places where you can tutor students. If you have a knack for architecture and home making volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. If you are passionate about homeless people, volunteer at the local homeless shelter or soup kitchen. There are a plethora of ways in which you can be help your community. Also, don’t just stop at your local community. Your impact can be global. There are so many teenagers out there who are stepping out of their comfort zones and making worldwide contributions to society. If you are creative and determined you can start your own non-profit. There was a teenager girl that was featured in Seventeen Magazine for starting a business that distributed pads and other feminine products to homeless women. Another girl featured on Seventeen started a business to raise awareness and money for endangered animals. These girls were passionate about something and acted upon it. All you need is determination and idea to make a difference in this world. Another way that you can change the world is to start with your friends. If your friends are going through a difficult time, do something that you know will make their day. You can bake a batch of their favorite cookies. You can write them a homemade letter or card. Good deeds can start with the people you love the most. Studies have shown that being kind to others improves your sense of fulfillment in life. Who doesn’t want that? This blog post will definitely encourage me to do something positive for the world. I will be brainstorming more ways to help the community and will possibly be writing about my experiences. I hope this has inspired you to do more good deeds. If you want more ideas on making your mark on the world, feel free to comment. Lets make the world a better place. That’s all I have for today.
Stay fabulous,
Abisola
